Shirley is one of Solihull’s largest suburban areas, positioned 3 miles south of Solihull town centre and approximately 6 miles southeast of Birmingham. The A34 Stratford Road forms its main artery, historically known as Shirley Street when first recorded in 1322 as “Schirleystret.” The name Shirley itself derives from “Syrley,” meaning “bright clearing” in Old English, first documented around 1240.

The earliest known settlement in the area was Berry Mound Camp at Solihull Lodge, an Iron Age hillfort dating to the 1st century BC covering approximately 11 acres. This rare example of a univallate hillfort with timber revetments demonstrates the site’s defensive importance during the period.

During the 18th century, Shirley’s location on the Stratford Road turnpike (operational 1725-1872) made it a stopping point for travellers. Coaching inns like the Red Lion and Saracens Head, which still stand today, served this traffic. Less savoury activities including bull-baiting and prize-fighting also took place here, prompting residents to petition for their own church. St James’s Church was built in 1831 on its own parish created in 1843.

Shirley transformed dramatically after the railway arrived in 1908. The town grew rapidly throughout the 1920s and 1930s with new housing, schools, and shops serving an expanding population as people moved from Birmingham. Notable developments between 1934-1937 included a Roman Catholic church, Odeon Cinema, public lido, and library. Post-war growth continued with major housing estates and the arrival of large employers like Lucas, who opened a significant site on Dog Kennel Lane in 1965.

Today, Shirley functions as a suburban commercial and residential centre. The Stratford Road shopping district serves a wide catchment, whilst surrounding residential areas exhibit clear socio-economic variation. Eastern neighbourhoods like Monkspath and Blossomfield show higher prosperity levels, whilst core Shirley areas including Shirley Heath and Woodlands have more blue-collar families and social housing. The area maintains its working suburban character distinct from both Birmingham and other parts of Solihull.

Shirley’s housing stock reflects its development across different periods. The area includes substantial quantities of 1920s and 1930s semi-detached and detached houses built during Shirley’s rapid expansion between the wars. Post-war developments brought additional housing estates, including the Cranmore Housing Estate and the Shakespeare self-build scheme.

Victorian and Edwardian properties appear in older sections near the original Shirley Street (now part of Stratford Road), while more recent developments include modern apartments and retirement properties.

Sought-after properties: Properties in sought-after roads like Tythe Barn Lane, Swinbrook Way, and Birchy Close command premium prices. The Monkspath and Blossomfield areas on Shirley’s eastern boundary offer larger family homes, whilst Solihull Lodge and Shirley Heath feature a mixture of property types including bungalows and extended family homes.

Developments: The Parkgate development, which opened in May 2015 as “A New Heart for Shirley,” transformed the town centre with retail-led mixed-use space including shops, restaurants, gym facilities, and the relocated library. Residential developments continue within and around the Parkgate site. The Lucas Gardens development offers new-build family homes with modern specifications. Several retirement living developments have been completed, including the Connaught Close apartments on Stratford Road.

Property prices: According to Rightmove data, the average property price in Shirley over the last year was ££350K. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £361K, while detached properties fetched £531K. Flats averaged £185K. Overall, prices in Shirley increased by 4% compared to the previous year, performing 1% higher than the 2022 peak of £347K.

Shirley sits at an important junction in Solihull’s transport network, with the A34 Stratford Road running through its centre as a major north-south route.

  • Car & Road: The M42 motorway is minutes away at Junction 4, providing rapid connections throughout the Midlands and to the M6 and M5 networks. The M42 links directly to the M40, opening up routes to Oxford and London. The A34 itself connects Birmingham city centre (approximately 6 miles north) with Stratford-upon-Avon. Journey times into Birmingham take around 15-20 minutes by car, while Solihull town centre is just 3 miles away.
  • Train: Shirley railway station, opened in 1908, provides regular services on the North Warwickshire Line. West Midlands Trains operates approximately 2 trains per hour to Birmingham Moor Street (15 minutes), with continuing services to Kidderminster and occasionally Worcester. Southbound services run to Whitlocks End and Stratford-upon-Avon (around 40 minutes). The station handles over 350,000 passengers annually.
  • Bus: National Express West Midlands operates several routes through Shirley, with services connecting to Birmingham city centre and Solihull, with frequent services throughout the day. Journey times to Solihull take approximately 15-20 minutes, while Birmingham city centre is around 30 minutes away.
  • Cycling and Walking: Shirley Park offers walking trails, including a one-mile route maintained by Solihull Active. The Stratford-upon-Avon Canal runs along Shirley’s western edge, providing a traffic-free walking and cycling route stretching to Kings Norton (4 miles north) or Stratford-upon-Avon to the south.
  • Airport: Birmingham Airport is approximately 7 miles northeast, accessible via the M42, making international travel particularly straightforward.

Shirley offers a range of destinations for residents seeking local activities, historical interest, and outdoor recreation.

  • Shirley Park: This Green Flag-awarded park lies at the heart of the shopping district off Stratford Road. The park features play equipment for children, free tennis courts, football and rugby pitches, a skate park, outdoor gym equipment, and a dedicated dog agility area. Formal ornamental gardens and walking trails including a one-mile route provide quieter spaces. The park underwent £600,000 of improvements in 2014. (Stratford Road, Shirley B90 3AL)
  • St James’s Church: Built in 1831 and enlarged in 1882, this parish church is notable for having its altar at the western end, possibly to distance it from earlier disreputable activities near the Plume of Feathers pub opposite. The churchyard contains 23 war graves and a 1921 war memorial.
  • Stratford-upon-Avon Canal: The canal skirts Shirley’s western edge, offering a traffic-free walking and cycling route. Walkers can follow the towpath north to Kings Norton (4 miles) or south towards Stratford-upon-Avon, passing through peaceful countryside and observing narrowboats navigating the locks.
  • Shirley Golf Club: Established on the site of Shirley’s former racecourse (operational mid-19th century to 1953), this members’ club offers an 18-hole course and facilities for golfers of all abilities. The club is regarded as one of the West Midlands’ quality golfing destinations.
  • Bills Wood Nature Reserve: These small woodland patches near Shirley Heath provide local green space for short walks and wildlife observation. The woods offer a quieter alternative to the more formal park spaces.
  • Parkgate Shopping Centre: Opened in 2015 as “A New Heart for Shirley,” this modern retail and leisure development replaced older town centre buildings. The centre houses major retailers including Asda, as well as restaurants, a gym, and Shirley Library, creating a contemporary focal point for the area.
  • Victorian Railway Workers Cottages: Eight original GWR railway workers’ cottages stand beside Shirley station, built when the line opened in 1908. These cottages provide tangible evidence of the railway’s role in Shirley’s early 20th-century growth. The detached Station Master’s residence overlooks the station car park.
  • Hillfield Park: Located on the outskirts of the town centre, this park offers additional green space with play areas and open grassland for informal recreation.
  • Shirley High Street (Stratford Road): The commercial heart of Shirley features a variety of bars, restaurants, shops, and services. The street underwent significant regeneration in recent years, with improved shopfronts and public realm works.
  • Malvern and Brueton Parks: Though technically in Solihull rather than Shirley proper, these interlinked parks covering 130 acres are easily reached and offer more extensive parkland, the River Blythe, and Tudor Grange Park’s facilities.

Shirley’s employment landscape reflects its role as both a residential suburb and a local commercial centre. The area serves as Solihull’s distribution hub, with major logistics operations including John Lewis facilities providing significant employment. The Marshall Lake retail park and Stratford Road shopping district generate substantial service sector jobs in retail, hospitality, and leisure.

According to 2024 ward profile data, approximately 30% of Shirley residents work in the public sector across healthcare, education, and public administration. Other significant industries include business services, wholesale and retail, and construction. The presence of office-based businesses along the Stratford Road and surrounding areas provides professional employment opportunities.

Major employers in the wider Solihull borough include Paragon Group and BNP Paribas, both of which draw commuters from Shirley. The proximity to Birmingham’s city centre employment market (15-20 minutes by train) makes Shirley an appealing base for professionals working in Birmingham’s finance, legal, and corporate sectors.

The automotive sector maintains a presence with numerous car dealerships along the A34, including franchises for premium brands such as Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, BMW, and Ferrari. These dealerships provide sales, service, and administrative roles.

Local unemployment remains below national averages. As of July 2023, Universal Credit claimant rates across Shirley’s wards ranged from 8.4% to 10.5%, notably lower than the Solihull average (12.7%) and England average. The area’s transport connections to Birmingham, Solihull, and the M42 corridor support employment flexibility, with Birmingham International station and Birmingham Airport both within easy reach for those requiring nationwide or international business travel.

Future employment prospects remain linked to Solihull’s ongoing economic development plans, with continued investment in business parks and commercial properties anticipated to maintain the area’s employment base.
