Bank of England Cuts Interest Rates to 4.75%: What This Means for Buyers, Homeowners and Landlords

The Bank of England has reduced interest rates by 0.25 percentage points, bringing the base rate down from 5% to 4.75%. This marks the second reduction this year, following an initial cut in August when inflation reached the Bank’s 2% target. The move was widely anticipated by investors, who placed a 98% probability on today’s decision.

This is welcome news for first-time buyers and homeowners facing mortgage renewals, as the cost of borrowing is now the lowest it’s been in over a year. Lower interest rates can make homeownership more accessible by reducing monthly mortgage payments, which is especially valuable during a period of economic uncertainty.

However, while the reduction in rates is favorable for borrowers, it also means decreased returns for savers. Those relying on interest from savings accounts may see lower yields, as banks typically adjust their savings rates in response to the Bank of England’s decisions.
